Final Legacy crsp/compustat merged database (cpz)
The July 29, 2010 shipment of the CRSP/ Compustat Database in the legacy CST format (Volume label CPZ), will be the last. Subsequent CCM shipments will contain only the Xpressfeed version of the data (Volume label CMZ). CRSP would like to hear from subscribers if this change will create challenges for your organization. We will be happy to work with you on achieving a solution. Please contact us by writing to Client Services at support@crsp.ChicagoBooth.edu or calling 312-263-6400, Option 2.
New CRSP Data Installs
In order to maintain support for our installation software, CRSP found it necessary to create new installs for our data products using InstallAnywhere. Differences found on Windows installations are largely cosmetic.
Linux and Solaris users will see minor differences in the setting of environment variables. These are described on the first page of the CRSP US Stock Release Notes for the May 2010 Update with details following on page 7 of the notes.
The new installations take the same elapsed time as the previous installs. Note that up front there is what seems to be quite a bit of time, measured in minutes, while your installation initializes. Resist the temptation to begin pushing buttons and the process will run smoothly. Once initialized, the install process is efficient.
Important Information for CRSPSift Version 2.3 Users

Gift to Chicago Booth in Appreciation of Fama
A $25 million gift has been made to Chicago Booth by Mac and Leslie McQuown. The McQuown’s donation is given in appreciation of CRSP Board Chairman and Professor Gene Fama as a longtime colleague, partner and friend and in memory of Merton Miller, a highly-valued teacher and mentor to both Mac McQuown and Professor Fama.
Mac McQuown is co-founder of Diversified Credit Investments, a San Francisco-based investment firm. He led the team at Wells-Fargo that, in 1971, created the first index fund, based on Gene Fama’s efficient market hypothesis and his own belief that computers and quantitative analysis could measure risk and return for virtually the entire equity market.
This is the initial building block for Chicago Booth’s planned Fama-Miller Center, which will support and promote the research of finance faculty.
50 year Milestone!

1926 marks beginning of time
Why 1926? The significance of 1926 is related to a landmark 3-½ year study that was initiated in 1960 at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business (formerly Chicago GSB). For the past 50 years, CRSP has been building on and expanding the initial 35 years of data used in the Fisher Lorie Study of 1964. Read more here >>
CRSP Board Members
CRSP Board Chairman and Professor Eugene Fama, has published a new paper entitled My Life in Finance, which looks back at some of his most important contributions to the field of financial research.
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: CRSP Board Member and Professor John Cochrane wrote an op-ed titled “Greek Myths and the Euro Tragedy.” “Greek bondholders are not being asked to miss a single interest payment, reschedule a cent of debt, suffer any write-down, take a forced rollover or conversion of short to long-term debt, or any of the other messy ways insolvent sovereigns deal with empty coffers,” he wrote. “Those who bought credit default swaps lose once again. But why? The reasoning behind the Greek bailout is founded on several myths that need exploding.”

CFO MAGAZINE: Research by CRSP Board Member and Professor Steven Kaplan was featured in an article headlined “What Makes a CEO Successful?” published May 19. For finance chiefs who have their sights trained on the corner office and want to develop their skill-sets accordingly, here’s a provocative notion: treating people with respect and being a good listener may not be all that important to becoming a successful CEO, the article said. “Team skills are not bad,” Professor Kaplan said. “But if you just have those without the action orientation, you don’t get anywhere.”
